Iowa State RN-to-BSN Programs Brings Nursing Education to Life Through Transformative Practicum Experiences

For working nurses pursuing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree at Iowa State University, learning extends far beyond the traditional classroom. Through innovative practicum experiences, RN-to-BSN students have opportunities to connect nursing theory with real-world communities, health systems, and global perspectives.

The Iowa State RN-to-BSN program is designed to prepare practicing nurses to lead, advocate, and advance health outcomes across all populations. A unique component of the program is the opportunity for students to participate in immersive learning experiences that bring course content to life through meaningful community engagement.

Students have the opportunity to travel with nursing faculty to Pine Ridge, South Dakota, where they learn alongside the Lakota people and community members. This immersive experience allows students to explore the cultural, historical, and social factors that influence health and well-being. By engaging directly with the community members, students deepen their understanding of social and structural determinants of health, cultural humility, advocacy, and the importance of relationship-centered care.

Students may also participate in an international nursing experience in Oslo, Norway, where they explore a different healthcare system and gain insight into global approaches to nursing practice. Through visits with healthcare professionals, community engagement, and exposure to Norwegian healthcare models, students examine the role of nurses within another healthcare context while reflecting on similarities and differences in access, prevention, public health, and patient care.

Whether learning from the Lakota community in South Dakota or exploring healthcare delivery in Norway, students develop a deeper appreciation for the many factors that influence health. These experiences create opportunities for nurses to collaborate with communities, engage with diverse healthcare sectors, and recognize the critical role nurses play as educators, advocates, and leaders.
