Program Overview

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program at Iowa State University prepares nurses to lead with confidence, advance clinical excellence, influence systems of care, and improve health outcomes across varied settings. Designed for working professionals, the online curriculum blends advanced theory, leadership development, and experiential learning. 

You will engage in evidence-based practice, collaboration, and applied clinical experiences, supported by faculty focused on student achievement and career advancement.

Customize your MSN experience by selecting one of two tracks that align with your career goals.

Nurse Education Track

  • Prepare to educate, mentor, and lead in academic and clinical environments. 
  • Strengthen the nursing workforce, support clinical excellence, and help meet the growing demand for nurse educators in classrooms, simulation labs, and practice settings.

Population Health Track

  • Lead change at the community and systems level.
  • Use data, research, and partnership-building to address social determinants of health, reduce disparities, and improve outcomes for populations.

Program Length & Format

The MSN begins each fall and is completed in 16 months of consecutive full-time study, with online, asynchronous courses designed to support work-life balance. A cohort-based structure fosters collaboration and professional networking while you complete 180 hours of structured experiential learning aligned with your chosen track. Through these experiences, you apply advanced concepts in education or population health settings with faculty-guided placement support that is aligned to program outcomes.
